The Assessment Objectives

Here’s a quick reminder about the Assessment Objectives for Photography A level. These are the same for the exam as the coursework. The more explicit you are about providing evidence that these objectives have been met, the easier it is for us to award you a mark and the more likely it is that you will have performed consistently across all four objectives:

AO1    Develop their ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

AO2    Experiment with and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining their ideas as their work develops.

AO3    Record in visual and/or other forms ideas, observations and insights relevant to their intentions, demonstrating an ability to reflect on their work and progress

AO4    Present a personal, informed and meaningful response demonstrating critical understanding, realising intentions and, where appropriate, making connections between visual, written, oral or other elements.

To summarise, you need to have evidence that you can:

  • generate ideas based on your intelligent reading of other people’s work
  • take risks, be experimental and refine your ideas
  • document and reflect on the process of your work
  • create interesting photographic images and evaluate them in relation to your sources

You need to do these things equally well if you hope to achieve a high grade.
