I recently visited the “FoMu Foto Museum” in Antwerp, Belgium. There was a diverse range of work, but I discovered several pieces by Thomas Joshua Cooper. He is an American photographer, born in the mid 1940s. His work is inspired by the 19th century photography tradition, by using selenium he creates powerful black and white photographs using a plate camera made in 1898 and the long exposures are in part due to the age of the equipment. His work explores the extremities of the landscape at the points of civilisation that are located furthest north, west, south and east on the map of Scotland.
